Grantee Profile
Lower Mississippi River Conservation Committee
The Mississippi Alluvial Valley extends 954 river miles from the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers at Cairo, Illinois, to the Gulf of Mexico. Ranging from 30 to 110 miles wide, encompassing approximately 22 million acres, and covering a portion of six different states (Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana), the alluvial valley is home to at least 91 species of freshwater fish. Nearly 40% of North America's waterfowl and 60% of all bird species in the United States migrate through the valley. Well over a dozen animal species native to the alluvial valley are threatened or endangered.
With participants representing 11 natural resource, conservation, and water quality agencies, the Lower Mississippi River Conservation Committee (LMRCC) promotes restoration where needed and fosters nature-based economic development. Federal agencies partner with the LMRCC and look to it for guidance for how to protect, enhance, and experience the biological richness in riverside communities.
