Grantee Profile
The Minnesota Project
Grounded in local experiences, the Minnesota Project is also a leader nationally in promoting conservation-based farming practices and advocating for sustainable agriculture policy. These advocates seek to increase incentives that reward farmers who use methods that benefit soil quality, wildlife, and water quality.
For more than a quarter-century, the Minnesota Project has dedicated itself to promoting commercially viable, conservation-based farming practices here in the Midwest, while simultaneously advocating for sustainable agriculture policy in Washington. Among its many noteworthy accomplishments: helping to devise and secure congressional funding for the federal Conservation Security Program (CSP), a program of the 2002 Farm Bill that provides economic incentives to farmers to reduce polluted run-off; convening the Minnesota Conservation Roundtable, 25 nonprofit and governmental farm and environmental interests who gather to educate about and discuss ways to improve government conservation programs; and a forward-looking pilot program in the Minnesota River Valley enabling farmers to integrate soil and water conservation practices into their plans for achieving and maintaining profitability.
