The McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience works to bring science closer to the day when diseases of the brain and behavior can be accurately diagnosed, prevented, and treated.

McKnight’s oldest research program, dating to 1977, is a direct legacy of founder William L. McKnight, who was interested in brain biology and diseases affecting memory.

The research program is overseen by The McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience, an independent organization established for this purpose and funded exclusively by The McKnight Foundation. Since 1987, McKnight has committed $70.7 million to the fund's grants program.

The Endowment Fund has its own board of directors, but is administered by the Foundation.
