MacPhail Center for Music, the largest community music school in the state, offers music education in 35 instruments, including voice, at three different locations throughout the Twin Cities. The school seeks to provide students of all backgrounds and abilities access to exceptional music learning experiences through extraordinary faculty, innovative programs and integrated learning technology to create successful outcomes. MacPhail works towards transforming lives and communities through exceptional music learning.
As part of the arts program’s strategy to support targeted projects of large arts organizations, McKnight supported MacPhail’s creation of the faculty-led Artistic Development Team (ADT). Through the ADT, MacPhail provides music teaching artists with opportunities and resources that support their artistic endeavors which will further enhance their interactions with students, artist colleagues throughout the community, and concert going audiences. As part of the teams work, ADT planned activities for MacPhail’s annual fall professional development event. ADT organized a morning concert that brought together faculty from different backgrounds, instruments, and genres. They also planned breakout sessions for faculty to choose from, such as yoga, Intro to Discovery through Visual Art, and a nature walk along the Mississippi River. These opportunities help MacPhail achieve its goal of introducing a new philosophy of professional development by providing resources to help teaching artist musicians create, learn, and collaborate.
From its inception in 1907, MacPhail Center for Music has grown to become a passionate organization at the forefront of music education and appreciation for the arts, and a leader in music therapy, Suzuki Talent Education, Early Childhood Music and community partnership programs. MacPhail also supports individual artists through a fellowship program that is also funded by The McKnight Foundation.
