In an upstairs studio in his south Minneapolis home, Douglas R. Ewart demonstrates one of his many creations. The one he calls the People’s Idiophone, a large metal contraption clangs in various tones as he plays.
“[It’s made of] lots of cooking utensils, pot covers, trays, hubcaps, old symbols,” Ewart said.

Polymath Douglas Ewart excels as a jazz composer and multi-instrumentalist. He’s a prolific painter, sculptor and conceptual artist. He designs and fabricates instruments. He writes poetry, teaches and informally mentors a raft of artists. But don’t call this modern day da Vinci a Renaissance man.
“I’m an African man or a Jamaican man — I have all the jobs,” he said, laughing.

The McKnight Foundation announced Douglas R. Ewart as its 2022 Distinguished Artist, an award given annually to a Minnesota artist who has made significant contributions to the state’s cultural life. “This award honors his heart and genius as well as his influence and impact,’” said DeAnna Cummings, Arts & Culture Program Director at McKnight.
